Useful databases for diplomatic activities
To be received by
18 March 2002		 Consult the list of examples (mind map) of "Useful Databases for Diplomats" at the course 2002 home page:
  • Try to find at least 3 additional websites that you use or consider specifically useful for your work
  • Briefly describe their contents and explain why you recommend them.

The results will be discussed online during the session of 19th March.
For the discussion you should also read the document “The deep WEB” .

29 March 2002		 1) Find some relevant information available online concerning the Task Force on Digital Opportunity. Give a brief description (max 10 lines) about the composition and the objectives of the Task Force. Indicate at least 3 useful websites for this issue.
 
2) Your Minister has been invited to the International Conference on e-government for development that will be held in Italy. You do not have the details about it and should try to find some information online in order to give some advice on the initiative. Please write a summary of information you have found so that your Minister will be well prepared for the Conference.

Refresh you memory taking a look at the presentation on Security online: some practical remarks

Exercise:

a) Describe how you can avoid to leave traces on your PC while navigating on the Internet

b) Describe what kind of antivirus software is installed on your PC. Check the virus profile (signatures) and see on the vendor’s site if it is the last available version of the signatures.

c) If you are using Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating systems, see how easy it is to find the username and passwords that are stored on your PC. Install and run the software ShowPass 1.0. Describe results (of course, do NOT list usernames and passwords you have retrieved !!!!)

d) The power of steganography - There is a document “hidden” in this picture. 

Download the picture and try to extract the document using the software Winsafe (function Tools/extract merged files) that you have to download  (it is 4.1 MB) and install (for a trial period). Write back the contents of the document.
